A Color Story: How to Wear Chocolate Tones this Fall

A Color Story: How to Wear Chocolate Tones this Fall

Posted by Nicci Hicks on

The cool embrace of fall has finally arrived, and with it comes the rich, season-defining hues. But this year, there is one standout color—chocolate brown. It offers warmth, depth, and a timeless appeal. Whether you're looking to indulge in the color of the season or sprinkle it in as a wardrobe ingredient, here are some ways to style or incorporate this versatile color this fall and for the foreseeable future (we don't think it's going anywhere).

1. Monochrome Magic

One of my mentors and former boss is a style icon. Her mastery of monochromatic looks is rivaled only by her exceptional negotiation skills. And like her deals, a monochromatic look is polished, cohesive, bold, and effortlessly elegant.

Style Tip: Try mixing textures to add tactile richness to monochromatic looks.

2. Complementary Neutrals

Chocolate and rich browns offer a calming balance when paired with neutrals like cream, camel, and black (yes black). If you are wary of jumping headfirst into mixing chocolate and neutrals (especially black), start with warmer browns like cinnamon. Two of my personal favorite styles are Sayaka Davis's cinnamon balloon sleeve sweater and spices compact cardigan

For a bit more casual look, try pairing either sweater with broken-in denim and finish with a camel wrap coat for a harmonious third layer.

3. Add a Handbag

If you are not in the market for new sweaters or pants but are drawn to chocolate brown, consider incorporating this color trend through a timeless handbag or shoe.

 4. With Pops of Color

While chocolate stands out on its own, it also serves as a neutral backdrop for brighter colors. Colorful scarves or handbags against rich and earthy browns are a way to inject energy into neutral look without being overpowering.

Chocolate brown is more than a seasonal trend. It is a timeless hue that adds warmth and depth. Whether you opt for a monochromatic look, pair it with complementary neutrals, or use it as a neutral background, chocolate brown adds depth and a sense of comfort to your wardrobe. It is a color that can make you stand out and feel grounded all at once.
